(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The latest demonstrations led to the arrest of several of those protesting against the attack on female students on Wednesday. The female students were attacked after staging a sit-in to protest against the pile-up of trash on campus and a break down in its hygienic conditions.
Law enforcement officers used water cannons to break up the women’s sit-in.
In a statement published in al-Watan newspaper, Saudi police confirmed that they had mediated at the university although they denied that male officers had attacked the women.
The university also issued a statement, in which it said it had asked police to intervene on Wednesday after "female students gathered on campus and began shouting in a way that contradicts" campus regulations.
It also blamed one of the students' parents of having caused the problem by firing garbage collectors, which led to trash piling up.
